Lipstick Chats: Depression, Worth, Self-Esteem

Geesh , I've had to edit the the first sentence over and over, so Happy Thursday Beauties, it's been a long but great week for me!... I've decided that I want to start a topic titled "Lipstick Chats." We will discuss everything that you can think of  in these chats, and I believe that they will be very helpful and inspiring, not only for myself but to others as well.

As I always say, this blog is very transparent. No use of sugar coating or masking important subjects that individuals come across on a daily basis.

One topic that stays in silence is DEPRESSION. Depression is a huge factor that has hit many individuals and many people still struggle with it day to day. It can be because they feel lost in life, they have a  partner or family members who makes them feel worthless, they hate their job, or they can't get out of the rut that they have been in for years. Whatever it is, I want to inspire you to KEEP PUSHING and KEEP MOVING FORWARD.

There are many signs of Depression, take a look at this list below.

  • Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
  • Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You've lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure.
  • Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
  • Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia).
  • Anger or irritability. Feeling agitated, restless, or even violent. Your tolerance level is low, your temper short, and everything and everyone gets on your nerves.
  • Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained. Your whole body may feel heavy, and even small tasks are exhausting or take longer to complete.
  • Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and mistakes.
  • Reckless behavior. You engage in escapist behavior such as substance abuse, compulsive gambling, reckless driving, or dangerous sports.
  • Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
  • Unexplained aches and pains. An increase in physical complaints such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain.
We may know someone or we may have been the person suffering from depression or noticed the signs. Life can hand us our own ass sometimes but what I want you to realize is that DO NOT LET ONE BAD DAY, or ONE BAD SITUATION MAKE YOU THINK THAT YOU HAVE A BAD LIFE! Get out around people who make you smile, who keeps you uplifted. Rid yourself of anything that does not deposit into your happiness. Listen to others, that may be all that they need. And smile, You're Worth Everytrhing that you think you are.

Muah!

BIG Business (Woman Files) 1587: Want to be FEATURED on THEE BLOG?

                                                   CC: 123rf.com/google.com

Besides my love for beauty and skincare, this blog is solely based on Lifestyle. I consider myself a (Newly Founded) Business Woman with a  Lifestyle and Beauty/Skincare Blog. It's not always easy being a woman and creating a business, especially an African-American woman. But, we have broken barriers, statistics, and we are honestly doing our thing when it comes to entrepreneurship and careers.

What is sometimes sad is that we as women feel insecure, can be jealous, and want to compete with other women because we don't want them to get to the top spot? LET'S JUST KEEP IT ALL THE WAY REAL FOR A SECOND LADIES! You know this happens in the world everyday.

BUT....

We also have women who love to empower other women, and support them. We see now that ladies are actually building a partnership and brand together. WHICH I THINK IS FABULOUS. Sometimes we don't realize that team work makes the dream work, and that if we help one another out we all could build our dreams and goals personally.

SO.....

Enough chatting,

If you are a woman who has a sense of STYLE, a woman who is all into BEAUTY and MAKEUP, or you are an ENTREPRENEUR, working a 9-5, I want to feature you here on the THEE LIPSTICK CANVAS.

Not only will I ask women to be featured because I think that they are amazing at whatever it is that they are doing, I want you to be able to feature yourself to give us more insight into your business.

To be considered for a feature, contact me via email at : theelipstickcanvas@gmail.com

Subject Line should state: Business Woman Files or BIG Business 1587

I look forward to shining some light on you all!

Lipstick & Love,

Erica

Lifestyle: LIVE + Fitness

I've talked before about being alive but not truly feeling alive. It could be that you are drowned out by your career, your lifestyle, bad habits and/or relationships.

One thing that has had me in this state has been my career, searching for purpose while pursuing passion. One day I woke up and decided that I no longer wanted to feel stressed and on top of that I no longer wanted to feel uncomfortable in my clothes and unhealthy.

I woke up grabbed my Polar Fitness Watch, threw on clothes and plugged Pandora into my ears and started for a 30 minute walk. Upon that walk I felt motivated, released baggage, and kept pushing and I haven't stopped yet.

I started March 8th, and it has felt really great. Now there have been setbacks such as this week, I've ate poorly and have had minimum exercise but trust me when I tell you I won't be giving up this time around. To see and feel those small changes is empowerment to keep going.

Find someone who motivates you or find reasons why you should stay determined and BEGIN! Can't wait to show progress pics, more detailed food and exercise regimens, and workout gear.

Current 3: BEAUTY & SKINCARE Favorites

Every month I would like to share my Favorite Beauty and Skincare Products with my lovely readers via blog posts or a YT Video. We all know by now that taking care of your body internally and your externally reaps the benefits of healthy skin. But, sometimes we all may have to combat a skin disorder that is out of our control.

So enough yapping, let's jump right in to my current favorites.

1. Simple, Micellar Cleansing Water has been one of my ride or die products ever since it was purchased. This product is made to cleanse, remove makeup, and hydrate your skin. There was so much raving about Micellar Water that I had to give it a try.

HOW I USE THE PRODUCT: After a very long workday and I'm sort of on the lazy side, I use it to cleanse my skin from all the pollutants from the day and hop in bed; think of it as my makeup remover wipe without the wipe, lol. Also since I have added retinol in my regimen which tends to make my skin peel, this refreshes my face after toning.

 2. Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair is a product that I wanted to give a shot. It had so many benefits to this moisturizer that I could not just walk pass it on the shelf. It is packed with Sunscreen, SPF 30, Retinol, and Vitamin C. I mean really what more can a lady ask for. Dealing with hyper-pigmentation and acne spots, I wanted a moisturizer that will combat my problematic skin.

HOW I USE THIS PRODUCT: I like to apply this product after toning my skin and right before I leave the house. Dealing with acne scarring the sun can actually make those spots worse, so the high SPF really helps to shield your skin. I do not like to apply this everyday because the retinol does make your skin peel.

 3. Bio-Oil is an oldie but goody. I love this because it combats many problems such as scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone and more. Having oily skin, I've always been afraid of using oils but it actually works well. It's like killing two birds with one stone.

HOW I USE THIS PRODUCT: I use it like a spot treatment, I apply the product to my dark spots and massage it into my skin. I also use this product on my tummy area due to stretch marks and my bikini line for any shaving spots.

Beauty First Impressions: Maybelline FIT Me Matte & Poreless

I decided to try out a new foundation. For awhile I decided to do away with foundation and wear BB Cream. Because of my sensitive skin, breakouts, etc I did not want anything heavy on my face.

I recently purchased Maybelline FIT Me Foundation. One thing that caught my attention is that it was Matte and Poreless. My oily skin gals know what I mean when we find anything that says Matte.

The shade I purchased was #355 Coconut.

What I love about this foundation
1. It is lightweight but it is full coverage.
2. It literally takes a nickel sized dab to cover my entire face.
3. The shade matches my skin perfectly. I do not have to mix any other shade with this foundation.
4. You can wear it for at least 4/5 hours without getting oily in the T-Zone.

The picture above shows my first time applying the foundation without a primer to test it out.

I would definitely recommend it. Thumbs up! Now when I apply foundation this is my first go to. Some compare it to MAC and Estée Lauder Foundation.

Try it out and let me know your thoughts.

Hairstyle: The Cut Life

I had been contemplating for a few months on my hair. I knew I loved my natural hair that is frequently blown out, but I knew I wanted some extra sass to myself. My first thought was a tapered curly fro. Now mind you I have not had a short cut since my shaved sides a few years ago.

Well you know what the saying is "When a Woman cuts her hair, she is about to change her life"

I've been craving change and betterment so I decided to chop my hair off, AGAIN!

Now the initial style was a doozy to me. So I've been playing around with it a lot. Mind you short hair does require maintenance and upkeep.

And, I have to get use to it. At first I wanted to drown in tears, thinking what did I just do?! But so far it's growing on me hour after hour...

You like? What style have you been afraid to try? Or what style did you go for ? Let me know your thoughts ...

Mommy Mode: J.Cole on Tavis Smiley

I am the Mother of a 9 year old son. He is amazing, talented, and truly a gift in my life. His name is Jhalen (prounounced J-len). As a mother I always have lots of concerns such as am I raising him right, showing him how to be a gentleman and I am on the right path when it comes to his education.

As we all know, knowledge can never be taken away from you. That is a gift you will always have and it can take you places that you have never imagined.

My son loves to read, he loves school but he also is a typical child who gets frustrated with Math, who likes to sometimes talk and play when that is not the lesson at the moment. He attends a school known for excellence and they will do what it takes to make sure that your child excels and works very hard. One thing that is so different from when I attended school is the way that lessons are being taught, it is called common core. The way that my son learns to break down his math equations is totally different from back in my day. Now, imagine trying to be the wing and tutor at home when math isn't your best subject either.....

I'll wait...... LOL!

Also, as a teacher I have seen that students learn subjects in different ways. They may grasp it by visual learning, or maybe by being hands on. But, have you ever realized that sometimes when doing work, you may not be retaining the information but you have mastered how to pass the tests and lessons to get to the next level?

This is what J.Cole spoke of in his latest sit down interview with Tavis Smiley. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Johns University, which is not always common for everyday rappers that we listen to on the radio. But, one thing is that J.Cole always knew he was going to go to college; in 1st grade he would always ask his teacher what his grades were, when they were only stamping Satisfactory and so forth on papers.

One thing, that stuck out to me is that he said he mastered how to take tests, you know cramming the night before and then going into class and blowing it out of the water. But, he felt as if he did not retain a lot of information as a student.

click to SEE THE INTERVIEW HERE...

It was an AHA moment for me. Why? Because I am so hard on my son when he does not do great on a test, and I am so hard on myself when it happens as well. I'm all discombobulated and upset, and asking myself where have I failed at because he didn't get the A+. We, as parents and just as individuals have to learn that ONE BAD or ONE GOOD TEST does not DEFINE how SMART we are, it does not make us DUMBFOUNDED, and it is just material that coincides with the lesson that is being taught. What it can do is help us learn more, or help us in areas where we may need to study.

LET ME KNOW YOUR FULL THOUGHTS about this perception and his interview.

Mind Stimulation: New Read/Book.

Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke, Audio book by Suze Orman

Hello you beautiful people. It's a rainy day here in North Carolina, and all I want to do is lay in bed, snack, watch good movies and do a little reading. What about you? Well, I'm actually here at work with an overloaded mind and a lot of other stuff but that's besides the point. I won't mope and groan right now.

Let me tell you all about my new read. It may be an old book to you, because I have seen it around before but it's a new read for me. I'm pretty darn excited about it, and so far it has been very valuable and helpful.

It is Suze Orman, The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, & Broke. That sums me up in three words, lol. I'm no where near wealthy so that means I'm still broke.  See, honestly I have not had much experience with being taught the proper and correct protocol when it comes to my finances. I've struggled time and time again with saving and managing money and fail often. But, one thing I know that I hate is having a small balance in my account, living paycheck to paycheck, not understanding proper financial terms and so much more.

I decided to go ahead and pick up the book to see if it could help me with getting my finances in order and if not that help me to better understand what is happening in this money filled world. Dealing with credit is not for the faint hearted so I've decided to buckle up and take this by storm.

I'm excited to know exactly what and how FICO works. Because if you would have asked me that a few days ago, I would have been a deer in the headlights.

What are you reading right now to stimulate your mind???

Buns & Bods: Swimwear

The Warmer Seasons are slowly creeping up from around the corner. Most of us are excited because we are over dealing with the snow, the cold weather, and the layers upon layers of clothing. One thing I am not proud of is that I did not put in any work in the Winter for my Summer Body. But I can only blame myself.

For the past few weeks, I have been raving that I am ready to wear my sundresses, shades, and sandals. I mean really, what woman you know that does not like to get all fancy in their sunny fits. And what woman do you know has time to be slathering on uncomfortable undergarments to suck in that belly and lift that booty? Nope, Not I! I plead the fifth! So, I better get started soon.

On a lighter note, let's take a peek at a fancy Swimwear line that I have had my eyes on for a while. It is Draya from VH1 Basketball Wives LA line titled Mint-Swim.

Since I am a mommy, I have to find one where I can cover these tiger marks, lol. Do you feel me? But, if I was ever able to wear a two piece set I am in love with the one above.

Would you splurge on Draya's line? Let me know your thoughts....

Lipstick Chat | Real Talk

Ever felt like you were ALIVE but you weren't TRULY LIVING? Like you were going through life DAY TO DAY but on the INSIDE you WERE at a STANDSTILL? This life that we live can take us through so many obstacles, hurdles, amazing moments, happy moments and heartaches. Day to Day we take life by what it hands us and what we put out into the Universe.

Its how so many of us feel at times, but we are too afraid to speak out and tell someone. Why? Because one, everyone will not understand. Two, they won't care, and Three, they are going to judge you anyway.

I'm going to be as transparent as it gets with you all. I'm removing my mask and being in honesty at this moment. The worst thing we can do is have a vision with no direction, a passion with a question of purpose. Taking away this is where I should be at this age, letting that go at this moment. There are many days where I breakdown, where I cry because I have Vision but fear, doubt, anxiety, other's opinions push me down where I question everything.

I feel like I'm ALIVE but I'm not authentically LIVING. Especially in my career. I've transitioned to being a Medical Instructor, which I honestly can say is not fulfilling to me. I want to work on my passions, my love for beauty, skincare, fashion etc. full-time. I know that isn't how it work. We all START SOMEWHERE. Maybe I'm there because I chose it, and because it's teaching me a valuable lesson on patience, dealing with others, and being of front stage everyday. Maybe GOD is preparing me for a bigger audience that I will speak to in my future and he is saying SHOW ME that you can handle this first.

Also, being a single parent throws me curve-balls each and everyday. It's amazing to watch my son grow, to see him become his own little self with so much personality is truly a blessing. But raising a son isn't easy. I just hope that I make him proud and teach him the right ways.

Another thing is that when you are in a relationship. You two become one, or something like that. You change, He Change. It's all suppose to be for the better. It's so great when you can learn from someone else, you can have a partner that has your back no matter what, and someone where you both can genuinely love one another. But the road there isn't easy, because sometimes we can lose sight of who we are.

One thing I search for everyday is True Bliss and Authentic Happiness and I will not stop until I reach it. I know that everyday will not be Sunshine and Rainbows, but when we learn to dance in the Storm we Get Through....

What your Skin May Be Telling You

Have you realized that your skin may not be breaking out because of all those new products you have tried? Ever heard of Face Mapping? It tells you exactly what is wrong with your skin due everything that is going on inside of  your body. I stumbled across face mapping a while back when I was trying to figure out why my forehead and cheek area was so problematic.

Again, if you do not know. I have been suffering from acne for a year or so. It is not severe, but I tend to breakout in spurts and it may progress for weeks at a time. For the past three weeks, I have been having a major breakout. I know that is partially due to my birth control contraceptive. Also a lot of it has to deal with stress and a really poor diet.

I have been eating lots of red meat, lots of fatty foods, snacks, and plenty of cocktails. The cocktails are there for the stressful days at work and home. Eekkk! According to the face map, my digestive system is a huge problem for me. Which I knew this because of regularity (don't judge, TMI). One thing that I do is take supplements. One of my favorite supplements is Acai Berry Cleanse Pills that I purchase from the Vitamin Shoppe. I also love to drink Traditional Medicinals' Organic Smooth Move Tea, and Yogi's Healthy Skin Detox Tea. When I am drinking my tea, and at least trying to clean eat with things such as my Morning Smoothies I see a huge difference in my skin.

This week's goal is to drink LOTS OF WATER, NO SODAS or JUICES unless it is my Green Juice. To cut out ALL red MEAT, and go for fish, chicken, turkey and such. I also want to exercise by walking at least 30 minutes a day. I will also detox my skin this week with my Bentonite Clay Powder and Apple cider vinegar.

What is your skin telling you? Let us know, and tell us some of your favorite tips to keep your skin healthy.

You Hanging Out or Not? : CIAA

When life hands you lemons, swap it out for limes and squeeze that ish into a cup of Patron. Yep, that's exactly how I wanted to start off this post. Because not everyday, every event, every situation will go as planned.

This weekend I decided to travel to Charlotte, NC to one of the biggest events called CIAA. I left on Saturday morning to meet up at my friend house and hang out a day party. Because I don't get out much I was super excited to let my hair down for a few hours.

Once I arrived, my friend welcomed me with open arms and delicious drinks. We began to get dressed and wait for my cousin to arrive.

Okay, so the next few hours went like this...

My friend had us in laughter and me over the top because while being a great hostess she was at her mostest. Her drinks caught up to her. After we got everything together, and my cousin leaving her ID in her city, we headed out to the EpicCentre.

The Epic Centre is located downtown/uptown. It consists of an area with sports bars, restaurants, hotels and so much more. We decided to hang out a party there for awhile, have a few drinks and kick back. And my night was over from there, I couldn't wait to get back to her house, wash my face and throw on my pjs.

It's so much fun to gather with friends and family when your life literally revolves around home and work.

It's bad when you don't enjoy yourself because you are use to just being a homebody and standing around a crowd for long hours does nothing at all for you.

Does this happen to you all at times? Where you are so excited to hang out but you are so ready to get back in your comfort zone? How do you deal with this?

Lent Season: Renewal

As you all know it is the time of Lent Season leading up to our Easter Holiday. It is a time for fasting, praying, and growing a closer relationship with God. Lent is for 40 days and starts after "Fat Tuesday." Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. It is a great way to just clear your mind and your body of distractions, clutter, and everything has been weighing you down constantly.

Personally, I have never participated in Lent. I decided this year that I wanted too try it. I developed a relationship and have known Christianity since a young child. As an adult, I am focused on building a better relationship with God. He is the ultimate power and savior of my life.

So, what I have done for lent is

1. I write down WHAT I AM THANKFUL FOR EVERYDAY in my notes. I did this because some times we get so caught up in what we don't have, where we are and where we should be instead of taking a moment to be THANKFUL for all GOD has given us.

2. I am reading a DAILY BIBLE PLAN that is called Preparing Our Hearts for Easter: A Lenten Devotional which is a 40 day plan. It helps me to study and apply the word of the Bible to my life. It draws me closer to God in the moments where I am seeking him and can take the time to just focus on what he says we should do in our life.

3. I cut out Social Media one day a week. I refrain from even logging into it. Social media can hinder us and really take our eyes off of the prize we have for ourselves because we log on to view everyone else's daily life.

There are many things that people sacrifice and give up during this time such as meats, alcohol, sweets and so forth. It's a time to sacrifice. Each week I want to try and add something else to my list or change it up. And being honest with you all, some people dive right in and then lose their momentum halfway. I wanted to start with something that I knew I could take on first.

I also looked up a few things before doing this and found some really great resources which I loved from upperroom.com :

FASTING: Some people have been known to go without food for days. But that's not the only way to fast. You can fast by cutting out some of the things in your life that distract you from God. Some Christians use the whole 40 days to fast from candy, tv, soft drinks, cigarettes or meat as a way to purify their bodies and lives. You might skip one meal a day and use that time to pray instead. Or you can give up some activity like worry or reality tv to spend time outside enjoying GodÕs creation. What do you need to let go of or "fast" from in order to focus on God? What clutters your calendar and life? How can you simplify your life in terms of what you eat, wear or do?
SERVICE: Some Christians take something on for Christ. You can collect food for the needy, volunteer once a week to tutor children, or work for reform and justice in your community. You can commit to help a different stranger, co-worker or friend everyday of Lent. Serving others is one way we serve God.
PRAYER: Christians also use Lent as a time of intentional prayer. You can pray while you walk, create music or art as a prayer to God, or savor a time of quiet listening. All can be ways of becoming more in tune with God.

Christians from many different traditions celebrate Lent. How will you use the time to grow closer to God?

Top Ten List: THINGS YOU CAN TRY FOR THE LENTEN SEASON

10. Try an electronic fast. Give up TV, Guitar Hero, texting, tweeeting, e-mail and all things electronic for one day every week. (or everyday of Lent!) Use the time to read & pray.
9. Start a prayer rhythm. Say a prayer every time you brush your teeth, hear an ambulance, or check your e-mail. Before you text someone, pray for them.
8. Read one chapter in the Bible each day. (Matthew's a good book to start with. Psalms, too.)
7. Forgive someone who doesn't deserve it (maybe even yourself.)
6. Give up soft drinks, fast food, tea or coffee. Give the money you save to help folks in Haiti or others in crisis.
5. Create a daily quiet time. Spend 30 minutes a day in silence and prayer.
4. Cultivate a life of gratitude. Write someone a thank you letter each week and be aware of how many people have helped you along the way.
3. Be kind to someone each day.
2. Pray for others you see as you walk to and from classes or drive to and from work.
1. Volunteer one hour or more each week with a local shelter, tutoring program, nursing home, prison ministry or aHabitat for Humanity project.

Hairstyle Gone Wrong: Fail!

Before I even let you view the pictures I have to tell you that you are going to holler when you see this failed attempt. Remember when I told you all a few posts down that I was going to try the crochet hairstyle? Let me tell you how horrible it was... Well let me show you the pictures first and you will see...

So I thought I really had something going after I installed the cold perm rods in right!
But wait let me show you how I was a lioness after the initial install.
And then the final product of a Poodle *covers eyes*

It was just horrible. I was so upset that I took it right out. Mind you I stayed up until 1:00a.m and woke up with a pounding headache all for it to turn out to look like this. Where did I go wrong?

Have you all had a style that went so left field you didn't know what to do? Did you revive it or just take it down?

I've been on a no heat journey and I was gunning for 3 months. After the failed attempt I straightened my hair because I did not want to deal with the long process of another protective style and this is what I'm looking like now.

I feel so much better :) lol.

Lipstick Style Alert: Bucket Handbag

Over the past few weeks one handbag that has been catching my attention has been The Bucket Handbag. It's trendy, chic and I love the strap for more comfort on those days where you are busy doing a lot of running around.

It seems that the colors are limitless when it comes this bag. Not only the color, but also you can purchase the bag in a variety of styles and prints.

I'm a fan of large handbags that usually you wear over the arm but sometimes the style can be annoying. So, when I can find comfort and chic mixed in one I AM ALL FOR IT HONEY!

This bag to me can be paired well with your favorite denim boyfriend jeans, a nice white chiffon top and your sexy heels all while out on the town for a lunch date with the boo or a shopping trip with the ladies.

Will you be adding this bag to your closet for Spring? Let me know....

Get Chic': Faux Sexy Hairstyle

You ever had the urge for a NEW Hairstyle but didn't have the guts to really do it?
_________________________________________________

I've always been a risk-taker when it came to my hair and I usually cut it once a year. Since, the natural and healthy hair journey I have left it alone besides getting my ends trimmed when needed.

I've been seeing this Natural Hair Tapered Cut on many Youtubers and I freaking' adore it so much. Getting bored with my hair, I was thinking what style should I try next? Yesterday I came across this video on Curly Nikki and jumped for joy.

The youtuber goes by the name AskPRoy and she shows you how to get the Faux Tapered Fro without actually cutting your hair. I am so excited and will be trying this as my next hairstyle.
